Why most gamers now prefer NFT gaming to traditional gaming

Youths in Nigeria are increasingly becoming a force in the NFT gaming industry. Result of a poll by Finder.com in 2022, about people who have adpoted NFT games, places Nigeria in the NFT gamers’ first spot in Africa. Of course, fun and profit are the motive. The fun of engaging an opponent about hundreds of kilometres away, and making money usually in USD is very alluring, intertwined with the blockchain ecosystem.
Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are transforming the world of gaming. NFTs in gaming are unique digital assets that cannot be replicated compared to traditional gaming assets. And this has become an issue because NFTs are disrupting the traditional gaming industry.
This post will explore how NFT gaming is affecting traditional gaming, a close look at their strengths, and the sparks these have raised.
Traditional Gaming
In traditional gaming, players buy a game or a subscription in order to play the game. Sometimes gamers buy DLC’s (downloadable contents) in addition to paying for the game itself, but generally speaking, no one owns the in-game items, and players cannot buy or sell their digital assets. Their investments in the game and its downloadable contents are most times lost when a new version of that game is released because they must purchase the new version.
NFT Gaming
NFT in gaming however, allows players to buy, sell, and own in-game assets. Since these assets are unique and cannot be counterfeited, they become highly valuable. NFTs often feature in gaming as weapons, skins, and characters and ownership is verified on the blockchain, which ensures investment security.
The Breakdown of the Industry
With the rise of games like Axie Infinity fueling a web3 gaming boom, NFT gaming has become a multi-billion dollar industry. Players now earn real money playing games and selling NFT in-game assets. This points to a major departure from the traditional gaming ecosystem which now seek to incorporate NFTs into their games to stay competitive and by NFTs, the blockchain.
What Traditional Gamers Claim.
Traditional gamers have argued that NFTs has taken away the natural fun attraction to gaming, focusing more on buying and selling of digital assets, citing concerns around scams and highly speculative NFTs, and using NFT as a means of cross-selling myriads of digital electronic products.
They are also concerned about the impact of NFTs carbon footprints on the environment. However Ethereum’s recent innovations around layer 2’s has been praised for its significant impact on carbon neutrality.
Conclusion
Experts are forecasting that as the industry continues to evolve, NFT gaming will takeover traditional gaming leaving it to innovate or perish completely.

This is pretty misleading. I estimate about 3-5% of all gamers are interacting with an NFT or blockchain game. Far from a majority, but I would love to see data to back up that headline.
