Barau, Opeyemi, 97 senators rally behind Anioma state creation

Anioma State as the sixth state in Nigeria’s Southeast zone has gathered overwhelming momentum, with at least 99 senators in the upper legislative chamber declaring their support.
Among the top backers are Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, and 97 other lawmakers. Their endorsement follows sustained lobbying by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nwoko, a prominent advocate of the Anioma State movement, had written a letter dated May 27, 2025, addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and all senators, appealing for their support. He argued that the creation of Anioma State is anchored on the principles of national development, equity, justice, and federal balance.
The proposal, captured under Senate Bill 481, is currently being debated as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process. With 90 senators already signed on, the initiative has far exceeded the constitutional two-thirds majority required in the Senate, which stands at 67 members.
Political observers believe this unprecedented support significantly boosts the prospects of Anioma State becoming a reality. Analysts say the campaign has evolved into a unifying cause that resonates across party lines and geopolitical zones.
Prominent lawmakers backing the proposal include Senate Minority Leader Abba Patrick Moro, former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole, former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson, former Abia State governor Orji Uzor Kalu, and Southeast stalwart Senator Victor Umeh.
Others on the list are former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel, FCT senator Ireti Kingibe, former Plateau State governor Simon Lalong, and Anambra North senator Tony Nwoye, among others.
With the constitutional hurdle already cleared in the Red Chamber, the Anioma State campaign is now seen as one of the most promising state creation efforts in Nigeria’s recent legislative history.
