APC Chieftain Congratulates Makinde on Iwo Road Terminal, Warns Against Underuse

Alhaji Kola Asanike, a senior chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, has congratulated Governor Seyi Makinde on the completion and commissioning of the Iwo Road Interface Bus Terminal, describing it as “a major infrastructure win for Ibadan and a bold step towards modernising urban transportation.”

While praising the state-of-the-art terminal as one of the most modern in the South-West, Asanike expressed concerns over its potential underutilisation. He warned that the facility’s expansive capacity may outstrip the number of intercity vehicles available at any given time, creating operational challenges.

“The bus terminal is impressive, no doubt. But its size may pose a challenge if the flow of intercity vehicles remains low. Idle spaces can quickly become environmental or social liabilities if not properly managed,” he said.

To address this, Asanike suggested deploying additional government-owned buses to ensure the terminal remains active. He emphasised that such a strategy would optimise usage while improving public transportation efficiency across the state.

Recognising the potential for tensions with existing transport unions, he recommended a collaborative approach, allowing union members to operate and manage government buses. “This will strengthen cooperation rather than create disaffection,” he noted.

Asanike also proposed establishing a Transport Academy within the terminal, a training centre to equip commercial drivers with skills in professional conduct, safety, customer relations, and global best practices. He argued that such training would elevate standards, promote discipline, and foster a cleaner, more organised public transport system.

“If part of the terminal is dedicated to training drivers and transport workers, the entire system will benefit. It will help eliminate antisocial behaviour and make disciplined operation the standard,” he added.

Concluding, the APC leader urged the state government to maximise the terminal’s potential so that it becomes not just a landmark, but a fully functional hub that enhances transportation efficiency, boosts economic activity, and reinforces Ibadan’s image as a modern and forward-looking city.
