SUBEB Urges Teachers to Boost Pupil Enrolment as Schools Resume Third Term

By Popoola Jamiu, Abeokuta

The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has called on teachers in public primary schools to intensify efforts toward increasing pupil enrolment as schools resume for the third term of the 2025/2026 academic session.

The Chairman of the Board, Olalekan Ifede, made the appeal during a monitoring exercise across selected schools in the state. He emphasised that sustained enrolment drives are essential to strengthening basic education and improving learning outcomes.

Represented by Permanent Member III, Abiodun Ajayi, the chairman expressed concern over the low turnout of pupils, urging teachers to adopt proactive strategies to engage parents and guardians.

“It is important to intensify the enrolment drive. Teachers must liaise with parents and guardians to ensure that pupils return to the classroom,” he said.

Ifede also underscored the importance of building strong foundational skills among pupils, particularly in reading, speaking, and writing, noting that these are critical to academic success.

While commending teachers for their professionalism and dedication, he urged them to translate their commitment into improved academic performance among learners. He added that recent progress recorded across schools should be sustained and built upon.

In their separate remarks, headteachers including Omowunmi Enitan of Yewa South Local Government Nursery and Primary School II, Ilaro, and Fausat Nasir of St. Joseph Nursery and Primary School, Oluwo-Odunjo in Abeokuta North Local Government Area, appreciated the monitoring team for the visit.

They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening enrolment drives and improving pupils’ academic performance in their respective schools.
