SUBEB Urges Teachers to Boost Pupil Enrolment as Schools Resume Third Term

The Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has urged the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to expedite approval of the 2023–2024 Teacher Development Programme for public primary school teachers in the state.

Chairman of the board, Olalekan Ifede, made the appeal while receiving the South-West Coordinator of UBEC, Beatrice Okei, at the board’s office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Ifede explained that approval of the programme would enable the training of teachers and ultimately improve the academic performance of pupils in public primary schools.

He noted that since assuming office about seven months ago, the board had made significant progress in addressing ongoing projects and programmes.

“I resumed office about seven months ago and met a lot of work on ground. With the support of my board members and directors, we have made appreciable progress,” he said.

According to him, the board inherited ongoing initiatives, including the Better Education Service Delivery for All programme and the Teacher Development Programme, which are now nearing completion.

The SUBEB chairman appealed to UBEC to facilitate the approval of the outstanding programme, noting that the board had already submitted its application and was eager to commence implementation.

He also disclosed that teachers in public primary schools across the state had begun adopting phonics-based teaching methods in foundation classes to strengthen pupils’ reading and communication skills.

Ifede further explained that the board met several 2020–2021 intervention projects upon his assumption of office and subsequently issued contractors a two-month ultimatum to complete them, adding that many of the projects were now close to completion.

Responding, Okei assured the board that she would liaise with the UBEC Executive Secretary to facilitate approval of the programme for the benefit of learners in the state.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director of Administration and Supplies at the board, Femi Fatade, said the visit by the UBEC team would strengthen the relationship between the two institutions and enhance collaborative efforts aimed at improving learning outcomes in public primary schools across Ogun State.
