First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to visit Abia, tour Akwete weaving cooperative

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will on Tuesday pay an official visit to Abia State, where she is expected to join Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti, in celebrating the state’s renowned Akwete weaving heritage.

The visit was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.

According to the statement, the First Lady will tour the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area, where she will interact with master weavers and observe the centuries-old craft for which the community is widely recognised.

The state government said the visit is aimed at showcasing the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of Akwete, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated traditional weaving centres.

Following the inspection of the weaving cooperative, Senator Tinubu, accompanied by Governor Otti, will proceed to the Akwete Central School Field for a civic reception organised in her honour.

The reception, scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., is expected to attract government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, stakeholders, and residents from across the state.

The Abia State Government described the visit as historic and urged residents, particularly those in Ukwa East Local Government Area and neighbouring communities, to come out in large numbers to welcome the First Lady.

The government expressed optimism that the visit would further promote Akwete’s globally acclaimed weaving industry and highlight the state’s rich cultural heritage.
