Ogun trains special needs teachers on effective classroom management

By Popoola Jamiu, Abeokuta

As part of efforts to improve the quality of education for every child, regardless of physical, emotional, intellectual or developmental differences, the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has trained special needs teachers across the state on effective classroom management.

Speaking during a one-day capacity-building workshop organised by the ministry for special education teachers in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, said the workshop was designed to sharpen teachers’ skills, broaden their perspectives and strengthen their professional capacity.

He noted that a well-managed classroom promotes concentration, cooperation, emotional stability, positive behaviour and improved academic outcomes among learners.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, the commissioner stated that the academic performance of special learners should not be limited by disability, but rather supported through the removal of environmental barriers.

He urged teachers to move beyond the traditional concept of discipline by embracing proactive and learner-centred interventions.

Arigbabu emphasised that the present administration remains committed to providing qualitative and accessible education for learners living with disabilities through the annual distribution of mobility aids and other support materials, as well as the provision of conducive teaching and learning environments in the five special needs schools across the state.

“If a child cannot learn the way we teach, then we must adapt and manage the environment in ways that enable the child to learn effectively and comfortably,” he said.

“Let us continue to build classrooms where every learner, regardless of their challenges, feels valued, supported, safe and empowered to succeed.”

In her remarks, the Director of Education, Department of Special Needs and Inclusive Education, Mrs. Deborah Ogundimu, described special needs classrooms as environments that go beyond mere instruction to spaces where teachers communicate safety, structure and belief in every learner.

She encouraged participants to maximise the opportunity provided by the training and apply the knowledge gained in their daily teaching activities for more effective and efficient results.
