Workers under the aegis of Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife on Monday paralysed academic activities for several hours.
The workers who held a protest complained about the non-payment of their hazard allowances approved by the Federal Government since 2013.During the protest all entrances leading to the university were locked and they prevented vehicular movement in and out of the institution for several hours.
The workers employed all means to ensure the management paid allowances for about 64 months they are being owed, an amount running into several millions of Naira.
Comrade Wole Odewunmi who is the chairman of NASU, OAU chapter, explained that, “after this, if the management refuses to respond to our demand, we will notify the management of an industrial action. This is just a notification ahead of our strike.
He added that “We met with the Pro-chancellor, but his response did not suit us. After I took the report of the meeting to our members, they decided we should make our agitation known to the management and the public.
The two parties – government and management – keep pushing blames to one another and it is this people we know that we will carry our protest to.”
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju explained that university would pay the workers as soon as it gets the allowance from the Federal Government.
