No jackpot from fuel subsidy removal, FG pushes back against perceptions of a revenue boom

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Shu’aib Aliyu as the new Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), while also renewing the tenure of Sule Abdulaziz as Managing Director/CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for a second and final term. Both appointments take immediate effect.

Aliyu succeeds Ahmed Aminu, who resigned from the PTDF to pursue the 2027 governorship election in Adamawa State. The Presidency described Aliyu as a seasoned academic and administrator, bringing extensive experience in research, institutional leadership, and human capital development to the role.

A statement released on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said:

“Professor Aliyu’s appointment underscores the President’s commitment to strengthening key institutions in the petroleum sector. He is expected to reposition the PTDF for greater impact in innovation, capacity development, and strategic support for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, in line with national priorities.”

On the renewal of Abdulaziz’s tenure at TCN, the statement noted that the decision followed a review of his performance in managing the nation’s electricity transmission network. Under his leadership, the company reportedly achieved improvements in grid stability, expanded transmission capacity, and modernised system operations.

Abdulaziz has also played a significant role in advancing regional electricity integration through the West African Power Pool, a development highlighted by the Presidency as vital for regional energy cooperation.

Tinubu urged both Aliyu and Abdulaziz to execute their duties with diligence, professionalism, and integrity, consistent with the goals of his Renewed Hope Agenda.
