Oyo faces imposition from Tinubu as Adelabu abandons the power albatross for governorship race

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from his position in the Federal Government as he prepares to contest the Oyo State governorship election.

His resignation, conveyed in a letter dated April 22, 2026, was addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and is scheduled to take effect from April 30, allowing time for a formal handover of duties.

Adelabu, in the letter routed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve, describing his time in office as both an honour and a privilege.

He noted that his decision to step down was guided by his intention to focus fully on his political ambition in Oyo State, as well as compliance with provisions of the amended Electoral Act, which restrict political office holders from contesting elections while in office.

The former minister said his interest in the Oyo governorship race dates back several years, recalling that he had previously resigned his role at the Central Bank of Nigeria to pursue the same ambition.

During his tenure, Adelabu was involved in ongoing reforms in the power sector, which he described as central to Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic development.

His resignation signals an early start to political realignments ahead of the next election cycle in Oyo State, where he is expected to emerge as a key contender.
