MTN opens applications for 2026 media innovation programme, expands cohort to 25

MTN Nigeria has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 edition of its Media Innovation Programme (MIP), expanding the number of fellows to 25 in commemoration of its 25th anniversary.

The telecom giant disclosed this in a statement issued in Lagos, noting that the increase from the previous 20 to 25 reflects both its milestone anniversary and a renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s media ecosystem.

Launched in 2022 in partnership with the Pan-Atlantic University’s School of Media and Communication, the fully funded six-month certificate programme has grown into a major capacity-building platform for media professionals across Africa.

According to MTN, the initiative is designed to equip journalists, broadcasters, and digital content creators with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to thrive in an increasingly dynamic media and technology landscape.

Speaking on the development, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, Tobe Okigbo, said the programme reflects the company’s long-term investment in the future of the media industry.MTN opens applications for 2026 media innovation programme, expands cohort to 25

“The Media Innovation Programme reflects our commitment to supporting the growth and evolution of the media industry by providing access to knowledge, exposure, and meaningful engagement with the realities shaping it,” he said, adding that the expansion to 25 fellows underscores the significance of MTN’s 25-year milestone.

The programme combines academic sessions with practical industry engagement and includes an international study visit. Participants will undergo training at the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, alongside exposure to industry leaders and policy stakeholders.

As part of its international component, fellows will also travel to South Africa for sessions at the University of Johannesburg, where they will engage with experts across media, business, and governance sectors.

Dean of the School of Media and Communication, Ikechukwu Obiaya, said the programme aligns with the institution’s goal of producing professionals equipped with both academic knowledge and practical skills.

He noted that the initiative integrates academic rigour with real-world relevance, enabling participants to develop critical thinking and professional competence required in a rapidly evolving media environment.

MTN also highlighted the growing impact of the programme since its inception, noting that alumni have gone on to occupy strategic roles in leading media organisations, launch new platforms, and shape public discourse across both traditional and digital channels.

Applications for the 2026 cohort are currently open and will close on April 22, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will undergo a competitive selection process, with successful applicants expected to commence the programme in May.

The programme is open to media professionals and digital content creators across print, broadcast, and online platforms, with a focus on individuals demonstrating innovation, strong storytelling abilities, and a commitment to professional development.
