Kano gov names Murtala Garo as deputy governor nominee

Governor Abba Yusuf has formally nominated Alhaji Murtala Garo as deputy governor of Kano State, forwarding his name to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.

The nomination was conveyed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who said the move complies with constitutional provisions guiding the replacement of a deputy governor.

The office became vacant following the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.

According to the statement, Yusuf’s decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders and leaders across the state, aimed at ensuring broad-based support for the nominee.

The governor urged the Assembly to expedite consideration of the request and grant approval in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Garo, described as a seasoned administrator, brings over 20 years of experience in public service. He has held various roles, including State Organising Secretary of his party and Special Adviser to the governor.

He also previously served as chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, as well as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State. He later held office as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

In the 2023 general elections, Garo contested as the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement noted that the nomination is part of ongoing efforts by the administration to consolidate governance and maintain continuity in policy execution across the state.
