Kano emir Sanusi returns to classroom, begins law degree at Northwest University

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has resumed academic life after enrolling as a 200-level student in the Law Faculty of Northwest University, Kano.

The traditional ruler joined other undergraduates for lectures on Tuesday, attending classes in his trademark regal attire, a black flowing gown paired with a white turban.

His enrollment follows the university’s decision to grant him special admission into its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Common and Sharia Law, citing his vast background in governance, economics and public service.

Founded in 2012, Northwest University is one of the two state-owned universities in Kano.

Despite his status as a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and a PhD holder, Sanusi has consistently promoted education, social reform and intellectual discourse. His decision to return to the classroom reinforces his reputation as an advocate of lifelong learning and a leading, sometimes controversial, public intellectual in Nigeria.
