Israeli PM Netanyahu opens up on battle with cancer

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed that he recently underwent treatment for an early-stage malignant tumour, assuring that the condition has been successfully addressed.

The 76-year-old leader made the disclosure in a post on X on Friday, explaining that the tumour was detected during a routine medical check-up following an earlier surgery for an enlarged benign prostate.

Netanyahu said the growth, which he described as “a tiny spot of less than a centimetre,” was discovered during ongoing medical monitoring and treated promptly.

“Treatment has removed the problem and left no trace of it,” he stated. “I had a minor medical issue with my prostate that was completely treated. Thank God, it’s behind me.”

According to the Prime Minister, the initial prostate procedure was carried out about 18 months ago, after which he remained under close medical observation.

He emphasised that he opted for immediate intervention once the tumour was identified, noting that he applies the same urgency to both personal and national matters.

“When I’m given information in time about a potential danger, I want to address it immediately,” Netanyahu said. “This is true on the national level and also on the personal level.”

Netanyahu further disclosed that the announcement of his condition was intentionally delayed due to prevailing geopolitical tensions, particularly with Iran.

He said he requested that details of his medical status be withheld at the time to prevent what he described as potential exploitation by Tehran for propaganda purposes.

The revelation comes amid heightened regional dynamics involving Israel and Iran, including recent coordinated military actions involving the United States.

It also coincides with Netanyahu’s expected visit to Washington in the coming weeks, where discussions are likely to focus on diplomatic efforts toward a possible peace framework with Iran.

Meanwhile, Israel has recently extended its ceasefire agreement with Lebanon by an additional three weeks, as part of ongoing measures to maintain stability in the region.
