Ogun Begins Free Health Insurance Registration for Retirees

The Ogun State Government has commenced the registration of retirees for its free Health Insurance Scheme, a welfare initiative aimed at improving access to healthcare and enhancing the well-being of senior citizens across the state.

The Permanent Secretary, Bureau of State Pensions, Mrs. Arinola Adetayo, disclosed this in Abeokuta, saying the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that retirees enjoy a healthy, peaceful and fulfilling life after active service.

She explained that the registration exercise, being conducted through the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency (OGSHIA), began on Monday, June 29, 2026, and will end on Friday, July 3, 2026.

According to her, registration is taking place at designated centres across the state, including the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) State Secretariat Event Centre, Abeokuta; Cathedral Church Hall, Ona Ola, Ayetoro; Treasury Cash Office, Ibiade; Treasury Cash Office, Ijebu-Ode; Treasury Cash Office, Ijebu-Igbo; Pensioners Hall, AUD Compound, Ota; and the NUP Secretariat, Balogun Road, Sagamu.

Adetayo urged all retirees to take advantage of the exercise, noting that beneficiaries would enjoy health insurance coverage without paying any premium.

She said the scheme is expected to improve the quality of life of pensioners by reducing the financial burden of medical expenses.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Afolabi Dosunmu, explained that the registration exercise is intended to document and capture both state and local government pensioners for seamless enrollment into the scheme.

Reacting to the initiative, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State chapter, Alhaji Waheed Oloyede, commended the state government for prioritising the welfare of retirees.

He described the introduction of the free health insurance scheme as a welcome development, noting that it would significantly ease healthcare costs and improve the living conditions of senior citizens across the state.
