Ibom Air begins international operations as Uyo–Accra route debuts May 2

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the commencement of international flight operations from the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, with a maiden route to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana, scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The development follows the formal upgrade of the airport to international status, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in what officials describe as a landmark step for aviation growth in the state.

In a statement on Tuesday, Governor Umo Eno confirmed that the inaugural flight will be operated by Ibom Air, with a return trip slated for Sunday, May 3, 2026.

He described the launch as a defining moment in Akwa Ibom’s aviation journey and a major boost for regional connectivity.

“I am pleased to announce that following Presidential approval for the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, to international status, the maiden international flight from Uyo to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana, is set to take off on Saturday, May 2, 2026,” Eno said.

According to him, the new route aligns with the state’s broader strategy to strengthen air connectivity, stimulate tourism, and attract foreign investment.

“This milestone marks another major step in our commitment to expanding aviation capacity, improving global connectivity, and positioning Akwa Ibom as a preferred destination for tourism, trade, and investment,” the governor added.

Governor Eno also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the upgrade, and to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for his support in ensuring the successful execution of the project. He further acknowledged past state administrations for laying the groundwork for the aviation sector’s development.

The Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, also hailed the development as a historic achievement, describing it as evidence of the state’s deliberate efforts to expand its aviation ecosystem and deepen international access.

In a statement, Umanah reiterated the government’s commitment to positioning Akwa Ibom as a competitive destination for tourism and investment, while appreciating both the President and the Aviation Minister for their roles in making the project a reality.

The announcement follows an earlier inspection of the airport facility in December 2025 by Minister Keyamo, who reportedly expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness and confirmed that the project was ahead of schedule for international operations.
