Arsenal strengthen title charge, go nine points clear as City drop points, Chelsea falter

Arsenal stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 9 points after leaving it late to secure a dramatic 2–0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were frustrated for much of the contest by a resilient Everton defence that repelled wave after wave of attacks. However, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 89th minute when substitute Viktor Gyökeres pounced on a pass from Piero Hincapié to fire home from close range.

With Everton pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Arsenal sealed the win seven minutes into stoppage time as Max Dowman finished off a swift counter-attack led by Gabriel Martinelli to secure all three points.

Arsenal are now on 70 points, nine above Manchester City on 61 points.

Chelsea, meanwhile, suffered a frustrating evening after falling to a narrow 1–0 defeat against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge. Anthony Gordon’s clinical first-half strike proved decisive in a hard-fought encounter.

Despite dominating possession and unleashing a barrage of shots on goal, the Blues were left empty-handed following a wasteful display in front of goal. Liam Delap and João Pedro both missed key opportunities as Newcastle defended resolutely to claim an important away victory, leaving Chelsea to rue their lack of cutting edge in the final third.

At the London Stadium, West Ham United battled to a gritty 1–1 draw against Manchester City. Bernardo Silva gave the visitors the lead before Konstantinos Mavropanos quickly levelled for the hosts in the first half.

City dominated proceedings thereafter, laying siege to the West Ham penalty area and earning 15 corners. However, the Hammers’ defence held firm under relentless pressure. Erling Haaland and Marc Guiu squandered late opportunities deep into stoppage time, leaving City with a frustrating result that feels like two points dropped in the title race.

In Spain, Real Madrid continued their impressive run with a commanding 4–1 victory over Elche at the Santiago Bernabéu, days after their emphatic 3–0 first-leg triumph over Manchester City in the Champions League.

First-half goals from Antonio Rüdiger and Federico Valverde set the tone for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Substitute Arda Güler later added a spectacular long-range strike from outside the box to cap a dominant display, with Madrid brushing aside their opponents to secure another three points in their La Liga campaign.

Elsewhere, Brighton & Hove Albion secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The decisive moment came in the 58th minute when Yankuba Minteh reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area, firing a right-footed shot past the goalkeeper.

Sunderland pushed forward in the closing stages in search of an equaliser, but after Dennis Cirkin dragged a stoppage-time opportunity wide, Brighton held firm to claim a valuable clean sheet on the road.

At Turf Moor, Burnley and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw in a contest where chances were created but not converted. Evanilson was repeatedly denied for the visitors, while Zian Flemming failed to capitalise on Burnley’s best attacking spells.

Bournemouth came closest to snatching victory in the closing moments, but substitute Enes Ünal and David Brooks both dragged late chances wide, leaving the Cherries to reflect on what might have been as the points were shared.
