Remo Stars relegated one year after historic NPFL title triumph

Remo Stars F.C. have suffered relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) just one year after winning their maiden league title in what has become one of the most dramatic downturns in recent Nigerian football history.

The Sky Blue Stars were officially relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL) following a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance F.C. on the final day of the season.

Remo Stars went into the decisive fixture knowing that only a positive result combined with favourable outcomes elsewhere could preserve their top-flight status. However, their survival hopes were shattered deep into stoppage time when Bendel Insurance scored a 94th-minute equaliser to deny the Ikenne club a crucial victory.

The result left Remo Stars in 16th position on the final league table with 47 points, confirming their drop to the second tier alongside El Kanemi Warriors F.C., Bayelsa United F.C. and Wikki Tourists F.C..

The relegation marks a stunning fall for a club that had celebrated a historic breakthrough only a season ago after emerging NPFL champions for the first time.

Remo Stars had been widely praised for their rapid rise, investment in infrastructure and youth development, but an inconsistent campaign and inability to secure vital points during the closing stages of the season ultimately proved costly.

Meanwhile, Rangers International F.C. were crowned NPFL champions for the ninth time after defeating Ikorodu City F.C. 2-1 away from home in a dramatic final-day encounter.

Rangers finished one point ahead of Rivers United F.C., who defeated Katsina United F.C. in Port Harcourt.

The triumph brought Rangers level with Enyimba F.C. as the most successful club in NPFL history with nine league titles.
