North, South Korea exchange fire

North and South Korean troops exchanged fire across their fortified border on Thursday, an official said.
A missile from the North Korea landed in a north-west part of its southern neighbour, whose military responded with artillery fire, a spokesman for Seoul’s Defence Ministry said, without adding information about any damage.
South Korea’s military were on their highest alert status, Yonhap News Agency reported. The country’s National Security Council had been summoned to an emergency session.
Earlier on Thursday, KBS radio broadcaster reported that North Korea’s military fired at a propaganda loudspeaker set up on South Korea’s side of the no-man’s land between the rival nations.
South Korea recently resumed transmitting propaganda messages across their fortified border after an 11-year break.
It was not clear whether the shot reported by KBS was the same incident as the missile mentioned by the Defence Ministry.
Pyongyang had warned it would shoot at the loudspeaker if the South turned it on.
