Liverpool legend Mo Salah set for new chapter, confirms summer exit

Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing to a close a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield that cemented his place among the club’s greatest players.

The Egyptian forward, who has become the third-highest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history, announced that he will depart the club this summer after an illustrious period filled with major silverware and individual accolades.

Since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017, Salah has been central to the club’s success under former manager Jurgen Klopp and his successors. During his time on Merseyside, the 33-year-old helped Liverpool win two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Salah’s consistency and goal-scoring ability made him one of the most feared forwards in world football for several seasons. Last year, he signed a two-year contract extension with the club following a sensational 2024/25 campaign in which he equalled the Premier League record for goal involvements in a single season, as Liverpool finished top of the table.

However, the current campaign has been more challenging for the veteran forward. Salah has struggled to replicate his usual prolific form, scoring just five league goals in 22 appearances. With the season nearing its conclusion, the Egyptian international has now decided that the time is right to pursue a new challenge away from Anfield.

His impending departure has already sparked speculation about his next destination, with several clubs across different leagues expected to express interest in signing the experienced winger.

One of the most likely options is a move to Saudi Arabia, where clubs have previously made significant efforts to lure Salah away from Europe. Saudi Pro League sides, particularly those backed by state investment such as Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli, have the financial strength to meet his wage expectations.

Al-Ittihad, however, appear to be the club most closely associated with a potential deal. The Saudi champions had submitted a £150 million bid for Salah during the final days of the 2023 summer transfer window, an offer Liverpool firmly rejected at the time. With the forward now set to leave the club, the Saudi side could renew their pursuit in the coming months.

Another possible destination for Salah is Major League Soccer in the United States, where several high-profile stars have moved in recent years. Sources close to the player suggest the MLS option could be an attractive proposition as he considers the next stage of his career.

Inter Miami, co-owned by former England captain David Beckham, would likely emerge as a leading contender if Salah chooses to head to the United States. The Florida-based club has built a reputation for attracting global superstars, most notably Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, who currently feature for the team.

MLS has increasingly become a landing spot for established European stars in recent seasons. Antoine Griezmann recently joined Orlando City, while players such as Son Heung-min and Thomas Muller made moves to LAFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps respectively last summer. After leading Egypt at the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Salah could follow a similar path.

Despite the speculation surrounding potential “retirement league” moves, the Egyptian captain could also opt to remain at the highest level of European football.

French champions Paris Saint-Germain could emerge as a possible destination. The Ligue 1 giants possess the financial power to meet Salah’s salary demands and are known for adding experienced global stars to their squad.

Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid have also been linked with the forward in the past, particularly during the peak years of his Liverpool career. While recent rumours suggesting Salah offered himself to the club following Kylian Mbappe’s injury remain unverified, Madrid could still view the veteran as a valuable short-term attacking option.

Italy could also provide a familiar environment for the winger. Before his move to Liverpool, Salah revived his career in Serie A with Fiorentina and Roma after an unsuccessful spell at Chelsea. Inter Milan, currently among the strongest teams in the Italian league, could consider adding his experience to their squad.

Another intriguing possibility is Turkish champions Galatasaray. The Istanbul club regularly competes in the UEFA Champions League and could offer Salah a lucrative contract while allowing him to continue playing in European competition.
