Ifon/Ilobu Communal Clash: Osun Govt Inaugurates 100-Member Peace Committee

To put an end to the raging communal clash between Ifon Osun and Ilobu communities in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke on Monday inaugurated 100-member peace committee.

Speaking during the inauguration, Adeleke said that the government decided to initiate a process that will guarantee a lasting peace in the affected communities.

Adeleke who was represented by the deputy governor, Prince Kola Adewusi, stated that government is deeply concerned about the incessant disputes over land among the communities of Ifon, llobu, and Erin-Osun, saying that growth and development will always be elusive in any society where peace fails to reign.

He said that the committee have two weeks to carry out its findings and submit its report to the Osun State Government.

He said, “Mr. Governor has, therefore, constituted an enlarged land crisis resolution committee on Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin – Osun boundary crisis, with the affected communities having twenty-five representatives each, while the State Government will also be represented by twenty – five members. The Ataoja of Osogbo land, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, Larooye II, and a retired judge of the Osun State judiciary and Chairman, Osun State Boundary Commission, Justice Moshood Adekunle Adeigbe, will serve as the Chairman and Co – Chairman of the committee respectively. Four other revered traditional rulers, as well as other individuals chosen by the government, will serve as members of the committee.

“At this juncture, you are enjoined as members of this committee to deploy your wealth of experience to bear on this critical assignment, bearing in mind that peace is essential in any society for social harmony, security, and economic stability.”

In his address, the Chairman of the Committee, the Ataoja of Osogbo land, Oba Jimoh Adetunji Olanipekun Larooye, assured that the committee will do all the possible best to ensure peace continue to reign in the three communities.

According to him, “I assure you that We shall do our best to ensure that we touch all areas in the crisis between Ifon, Ilobu and Erin-Osun.”

The committee is saddled with responsibility of looking at the remote and immediate causes of the dispute, determining, delimitating and marking the exact boundaries among the three, communities of Ifon, llobu and Erin-Osun.

Other terms of reference for the committee include signing a truce with a view to nipping the dispute in the bud, taking appropriate decisions that will enable the government to
achieve permanent peace in the areas, making recommendations to government on permanent delineation of the boundaries, paying visits to the location, among others.
