Police seize truck loaded with military uniforms, suspected drugs in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has intercepted a truck conveying dozens of sacks of military camouflage uniforms and cartons of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, raising fresh concerns over the circulation of military gear among criminal elements.

Three suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure during an intelligence-driven operation carried out by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit in the Surulere area of Lagos.

Speaking at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, said the operation led to the arrest of Chinedu David, 29, Ezeagwu Chukwuma, 38, and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi, 45.

According to him, the suspects were apprehended on Saturday night with an unregistered MAN diesel truck loaded with 47 sacks containing military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of substances believed to be illicit drugs.

Tijani described the recovery as a significant breakthrough in the command’s efforts to disrupt criminal networks and prevent the unlawful circulation of security-related materials.

“Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, acting on intelligence-led operations, recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of three suspects,” the commissioner said.

He disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated that the consignment of military uniforms was allegedly being transported to the South-East region of the country.

The police chief, however, said investigators were still working to determine the source of the recovered items, their ownership, and their intended destination.

“Investigation is ongoing to determine the source, ownership and intended recipients of the recovered items, as well as establish the extent of the suspects’ involvement and identify other persons connected with the criminal act,” he stated.

Despite concerns over the large quantity of military uniforms recovered, Tijani assured residents that the seizure did not pose an immediate security threat to Lagos, noting that the truck was intercepted while moving the items out of the state.

He nonetheless expressed concern about the possible use of such uniforms by criminal groups.

“They were moving out of the state, but with the trend of events in the country where we have seen bandits wear military uniforms, who knows what they want to do with this? Nobody could tell,” he said.

A police source familiar with the investigation revealed that the truck driver and his assistant were initially taken into custody before investigators tracked down two additional suspects linked to the recovered items.

According to the source, the additional suspects were arrested after they reportedly visited a police station in Surulere to claim ownership of the seized exhibits.

The latest recovery comes amid growing security concerns over the proliferation of military-style uniforms in the hands of non-state actors, a development security experts say can aid criminal activities by enabling suspects to impersonate security personnel and evade detection.

Police authorities said investigations are continuing and assured that all individuals connected to the shipment would be identified and brought to justice.
