Abia bans commercial motorcycle operations in metropolitan areas

By Peter Okore, Umuahia
The Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as “Okada,” within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, effective from Monday, June 22, 2026.
Under the directive, all commercial motorcycle operators are required to cease operations within the affected metropolitan areas before the commencement date. Security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been mandated to ensure strict compliance with the order.
The measure was contained in a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, and made available to journalists in Umuahia at the weekend.
According to the statement, the policy, which has received the approval of Governor Alex Otti, forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security, enhance public safety, improve traffic management and promote a more organised transportation system across the affected urban centres.
“The policy is aimed at addressing security concerns, reducing traffic congestion and creating a safer and more efficient transport environment for residents,” the statement said.
It warned that any individual or operator found violating the directive would be arrested, while the motorcycle involved would be confiscated in accordance with the law.
The government called on residents, transport operators, community leaders and members of the public to cooperate fully with the authorities in the implementation of the directive, describing it as a necessary step towards advancing the collective safety and development of the state.
It further urged all concerned stakeholders to take immediate note of the directive and comply accordingly.
