Arsenal, Atletico Madrid share spoils in tense Champions League semi-final clash

Arsenal and Atletico Madrid settled for a 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final in the Spanish capital.
The visitors took the lead just before half-time after Viktor Gyokeres converted from the penalty spot. The striker calmly dispatched the spot-kick after being brought down in the box by David Hancko, capping a dominant first-half display by Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta’s side controlled proceedings for much of the opening period, dictating the tempo and limiting Atletico’s attacking threat with a composed and disciplined performance.
However, the hosts emerged revitalised after the break, spurred on by a passionate home crowd and the animated presence of their manager, Diego Simeone, on the touchline.
Atletico’s resurgence paid off when Julian Alvarez equalised from the penalty spot in controversial circumstances, drawing protests from the Arsenal players. Alvarez made no mistake, blasting the ball home to level the tie and set up a finely poised second leg.
The encounter was also marred by pre-match disturbances outside the stadium, with reports indicating that police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse unruly crowds ahead of kickoff.
Both sides will now turn their attention to the return leg, with the tie delicately balanced.
In the other semi-final played on Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain edged Bayern Munich 5-4 in a thrilling nine-goal encounter.
