Sheikh Gumi Refutes Viral Claims of US Airstrike Targeting Him

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed circulating reports suggesting he was targeted by a United States military airstrike in Kaduna.

The claims, which began trending on social media on Sunday, alleged that security forces had launched a mission to eliminate the controversial cleric.

Gumi, however, clarified that the video fueling the rumours is old and referenced a past threat to his life from Boko Haram in 2012. Writing on his official Facebook page, he said there is currently no danger to his life.

“There is fake news going viral now claiming I was targeted by a US attack on Nigerian soil. I never said so, and I never thought of such a possibility. I am comfortably staying at home with my family without fear or intimidation,” he said.

Gumi recounted that in 2012, Boko Haram allegedly planned to eliminate him, but the two assailants were killed when the bomb they carried detonated near his house.

He urged news outlets that circulated the misinformation to retract their reports and issue public apologies.

“I advise all news agencies that reported the fake news to publicly retract it and tender their apologies,” he added.
