The Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company, Mr Segun Agbaje, has been recognized as the winner of the 2025 Banking Pioneer Award at the Texcellence Conference Awards for his role in transforming digital banking in Nigeria and across Africa.

The Texcellence Awards, organized by CWG Plc, and positioned as the definitive gathering to celebrate leaders and institutions driving technological progress and innovation across the continent. The platform has grown into a major gathering of Africa’s technology and enterprise leaders who are shaping the future of digital transformation.

Speaking on the awards, Chairman of CWG Plc, Phillip Obioha, stated the Texcellence initiative was established to recognize leaders and institutions that are actively shaping Africa’s digital competitiveness through deliberate infrastructure development, innovation and cross – sector collaboration.

He emphasized that the awards recognize leaders building critical infrastructure and systems that support innovation, financial inclusion and economic growth.

With the theme “Future Forward Africa: Leveraging Technology for Global Competitiveness,” this year’s edition highlighted executives and organizations whose work strengthens digital infrastructure, promotes secure platforms and drives scalable enterprise solutions across industries.

“Rather than celebrating technology adoption alone, Texcellence 4.0 honoured those building the rails, the broadband networks, financial systems, interoperable platforms, and trusted digital ecosystems that position Africa to compete confidently on a global stage,” Obioha said.

According to the organizers, the Banking Pioneer Award recognizes visionary leaders who have reshaped Nigeria’s financial services landscape and elevated Africa’s role in global banking.

“The Banking Pioneer Award celebrates a visionary leader, founder, or architect of a banking institution who has fundamentally reshaped Nigeria’s financial services landscape and elevated Africa’s position in global banking. This award recognizes individuals who possess the courage to imagine a different future for banking—and the tenacity to bring that vision to life against all odds,” Obioha noted.

“These are not merely executives managing institutions; they are trailblazers who rewrote the rules, transforming how millions of Africans bank, transact, and engage with financial services,” he added.

In announcing the winner, the awards committee described Agbaje as a key figure behind one of Africa’s most successful banking transformation stories.

“For nearly three decades, Segun Agbaje has been the architect of one of African banking’s most remarkable success stories,” the organizers said.

They noted that when Agbaje joined GTBank in 1991, the Nigerian banking sector was largely manual, dominated by long teller queues and paper-based transactions.

However, under his leadership, the bank embraced technology-driven innovation. One of its most notable initiatives was the *737# USSD banking platform, which made banking services accessible to millions of Nigerians who had never visited a bank branch.

Agbaje also led the launch of GTWorld, Africa’s first biometric mobile banking application, helping position the institution as a leader in digital banking innovation.

The Texcellence Awards Committee said the recognition reflects Agbaje’s long-standing commitment to technology-led transformation.

Under his leadership, GTCO has evolved from a traditional commercial bank into a diversified financial services group driven by digital infrastructure, innovation and a strong focus on customer experience.
