Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has commissioned the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal built by his administration and opened it for public use.
At the event on Wednesday, the governor named the facility after Prof. Nnenna Oti, the former INEC Returning Officer who announced his victory in the 2023 governorship election.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Otti said Prof. Oti, INEC staff, and security agencies rejected bribery and stood against intimidation, electoral impunity, and result manipulation.
“This terminal has been named after Prof. Nnenna Nnannaya Oti, INEC officer, for her courage and sacrifice,” he said.
Otti explained that the bus terminal was conceived to bring safety and order to transport operations in Umuahia and ensure smooth traffic flow.
He added that it would create wealth for road transport operators and boost the state’s economy.
The governor also commissioned roads on the same day.
Responding, Prof. Nnenna Oti, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, said she did the right thing by declaring Otti winner in 2023.
“I stood and I still stand that votes must count. The wish of the people must count. I simply did the right thing, and I want Nigeria to do the right thing,” she said.
With the commissioning of the terminal, the government expects to curb the proliferation of makeshift parks across Umuahia and Aba.
Minibuses, luxury buses, cars, and other forms of transport will now be easily identified and managed at the terminal.
