Dropped Super Falcons stars allege improper demands behind WAFCON exclusion

A social media storm triggered by allegations of misconduct within the Super Falcons setup has taken a new twist after it emerged that a Facebook account claiming to belong to defender Ashleigh Plumptre was fake.

The controversy began when a Facebook post, purportedly written by Plumptre, alleged that she had been excluded from Nigeria’s squad for the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after refusing improper demands from unnamed officials.

The post quickly gained traction online, sparking outrage among football fans and prompting calls for an investigation into the administration of the women’s national team.

However, the claims have since been debunked.

Paris-based journalist Ojora Babatunde disclosed that he contacted Plumptre directly regarding the viral post and was informed by the defender that the Facebook account was not hers.

According to the journalist, Plumptre stated that she does not operate a Facebook account and urged supporters to rely only on her verified social media platforms, particularly Instagram and X, for authentic information.

The clarification effectively discredits the allegations attributed to the defender and casts doubt on claims that she accused officials of wrongdoing over team selection.

Unlike the viral post linked to Plumptre, Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo has publicly questioned her exclusion from the national team and challenged officials to disclose what she described as the “real reasons” behind the decision.

In a statement circulated on social media, Okoronkwo accused unnamed officials of misleading Nigerians about her omission and warned that she could reveal her own account of events if the matter is not properly addressed.

The midfielder’s comments have fueled speculation about possible disagreements behind the scenes, although she did not provide specific details or evidence to support her claims.

The development comes as discussions continue over preparations for the next WAFCON tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 16.

Plumptre, who played a key role for the Super Falcons and has remained a regular member of the national team, is currently recovering from a foot injury sustained while playing for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. She has also featured in recent international friendlies for Nigeria.

As of now, no official Super Falcons squad for the 2026 WAFCON has been announced.

Neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor the Super Falcons coaching crew has issued a formal statement regarding Okoronkwo’s concerns.
