Amnesty demands probe as Sowore collapses during Abuja Democracy Day protest
Amnesty International has condemned the alleged use of force against Democracy Day protesters in Abuja, calling on authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported collapse of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.
In a statement released on Friday, the global human rights organisation accused security operatives of disrupting a peaceful protest and expressed concern over reports that teargas was deployed against demonstrators gathered at the Unity Fountain.
According to Amnesty International, Sowore was among those affected during the incident and was subsequently taken to a hospital after reportedly collapsing.
The organisation described the development as a worrying indication of what it called continued restrictions on citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
Amnesty maintained that peaceful protesters and activists should not be subjected to intimidation, harassment or force for exercising rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights instruments.
The group said any action aimed at suppressing lawful demonstrations undermines democratic principles and weakens public confidence in the protection of civil liberties.
It further urged the authorities to identify those responsible for the alleged use of excessive force and ensure accountability where necessary.
The incident occurred during a protest organised by civil society organisations and pro-democracy groups to commemorate June 12 and draw attention to issues including insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges facing the country.
Videos circulated on social media showed moments of confusion at the protest venue, with demonstrators rallying around Sowore after he reportedly fell to the ground.
The Democracy Day protest formed part of a nationwide mobilisation by activists, labour groups, youth organisations and civic movements advocating reforms and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
Amnesty International reiterated its call on the government to respect and protect the rights of citizens to assemble peacefully and express dissenting views without fear of intimidation or reprisals.
