Alex Otti @61: Celebrating a life of vision, service, and transformative leadership

Today, February 18, 2026, marks the 61st birthday of Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, the Governor of Abia State and a distinguished economist, banker, and statesman. As the nation pauses to celebrate this milestone, it is an opportune moment to reflect on a life defined by resilience, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the service of humanity.
From the bustling boardrooms of Lagos to the corridors of power in Umuehim, Nvosi, Otti’s journey has been one of courage, perseverance, and transformative leadership. Before entering politics, he was a towering figure in Nigeria’s banking sector, serving as the Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank PLC. Under his leadership, the institution rose to become one of Nigeria’s top tier-1 banks, a testament to his strategic acumen, visionary thinking, and dedication to excellence.
Yet, despite the allure of corporate success, Otti chose a path less traveled, he turned his attention to the development of his home state, Abia, and the betterment of its people.
Dr. Otti’s political journey has been shaped by patience, resilience, and an unyielding belief in the potential of Abia. On three separate occasions, the Nigerian political system seemed to deny him his rightful place as governor. In 2015, despite winning the governorship election, the political machinery at the time obstructed his victory. Yet, Otti remained undeterred. He resisted the lure of political appointments and privileges offered at both state and federal levels, remaining steadfast in his pursuit of a mandate that would allow him to serve his people directly.
His perseverance was rewarded in 2023 when the electorate resoundingly entrusted him with the governorship. From the moment he assumed office, he “hit the ground running,” demonstrating the kind of hands-on leadership that has become his hallmark. Within his first 100 days, he was already recognised as one of the best performing governors in the nation, and 21 months into his tenure, he continues to transform Abia with a level of commitment and focus rarely seen in Nigerian politics.
Under Otti’s leadership, Abia has experienced a remarkable renaissance. The state has gone from hosting Aba, once notorious as one of Nigeria’s dirtiest cities, to becoming a model of urban cleanliness and order. Civil servants and retirees, who had endured months of unpaid salaries, now receive their entitlements punctually on the 28th of every month, restoring dignity and confidence to public service. Security, long a major concern for residents, has improved significantly through the multi-agency initiative “Operation Crush,” making Abia one of the safest states in Nigeria today.
Infrastructure has been a central pillar of Otti’s administration. More than 200 road projects, spanning strategic urban and rural areas, are either completed or ongoing. The healthcare sector has not been left behind. Through the N10.78 billion “Ekwueme” project, over 200 primary health care facilities are being renovated and retrofitted, ensuring access to quality healthcare for rural and urban communities alike. Similarly, the education and judiciary sectors are witnessing massive upgrades, with primary and secondary schools, as well as court facilities, benefiting from extensive renovations.
Governor Otti’s vision extends beyond physical infrastructure to human capital development. His administration has empowered thousands of Abia youths through skills acquisition programs and interest-free loans, while supporting micro, small, and medium-scale entrepreneurs across the state. Farmers have received high-yield seeds, fertilizers, and other resources, enabling Abia to strengthen food production and agricultural sustainability. These initiatives demonstrate his holistic approach to governance, blending tangible development with empowerment and opportunity creation.
His achievements have not gone unnoticed. Members of the opposition, including President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has acknowledged the Governor’s commitment to excellence and prudence in the management of public resources.
Yet, despite these accolades, Otti remains humble, disciplined, and deeply committed to the people he serves. He eschews personal glorification, focusing instead on meaningful results that impact ordinary citizens. Whether it is paying salaries on time, rehabilitating roads, empowering youths, or providing security, his actions speak louder than any words of praise.
As he marks his 61st birthday, it is fitting to celebrate not only his personal achievements but also the hope, progress, and transformation he has brought to Abia State. Labour Party, through its Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, rightly hails him as a “torchbearer,” a leader whose vision and determination are redefining governance and inspiring a generation.
Alex Otti is a redeemer of Abia’s promise, a statesman of rare integrity, and a symbol of what focused, principled leadership can achieve. On this special day, we join family, friends, political associates, and citizens across Abia to wish him continued good health, wisdom, and strength as he continues to deliver good governance and transform lives.
From all of us at Business Hallmark, happy 61st birthday, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, a visionary, a leader, and a true son of Abia.
