Abia doubles optometry internship intake, raises stipends for incoming interns

The Abia State Government has strengthened its commitment to healthcare workforce development by increasing stipends for optometry interns and doubling the number of intake slots, following the successful completion of an 11-member internship program at the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau.

The announcement was made during a combined send-forth ceremony for outgoing interns and a welcome reception for incoming interns, where Dr. Mrs. Betty Emeka Obasi, Administrator of the Bureau, highlighted the progress achieved under the current administration’s health sector reforms.

“Previously, optometry interns in the state were neither paid stipends nor formally recognized upon completing their training,” Dr. Obasi said. “Under the present reforms, that narrative has changed, ensuring interns are supported and adequately prepared for professional practice.”

A statement on Thursday by Chioma Mpama, Information Officer II at the bureau, said the outgoing interns were selected strictly on merit and underwent rigorous academic and clinical training, including weekly academic sessions, monthly assessments, rotations across all eye clinic units, and participation in community outreach programs.

Dr. Obasi, according to the statement, expressed confidence that the interns were now capable of operating ophthalmic equipment and managing clinics independently.

In a further demonstration of the government’s support, she announced that the internship intake would now be doubled, and that stipends for incoming interns would be higher than those of the previous cohort.

Three interns from the outgoing batch were recognized as Outstanding Interns and will be retained pending completion of their National Youth Service, reflecting the Bureau’s commitment to retaining exceptional talent.

Dr. Chinedu Agbayim, delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the outgoing interns, commended Dr. Obasi for fostering a culture of professionalism, punctuality, and accountability. He also acknowledged senior colleagues for mentoring the interns, adding that the program had prepared them to independently establish and manage eye care clinics.

The event concluded with interactive games and a question-and-answer session, allowing outgoing and incoming interns to share experiences and celebrate the achievements of the year.
