Nigeria’s progress hinges on quality leadership, says Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said Nigeria can unlock its enormous potential and achieve lasting prosperity if it is guided by competent, transparent and people-centred leadership.
Obi stated this following his participation in a high-level policy dialogue titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, Germany.
The former Anambra State governor, in a post on his official X handle, said the discussion focused on Nigeria’s democratic future, economic development, international relations and opportunities for strengthening partnerships that could support national growth.
He noted that participants at the event expressed considerable interest in Nigeria’s trajectory and the measures needed to promote sustainable development and stability.
According to Obi, Nigeria possesses abundant human and natural resources capable of driving rapid economic transformation and positioning the country among the world’s leading economies.
He argued, however, that realising this potential requires leadership that is accountable, compassionate and committed to serving the interests of the people.
Obi stressed that investment in critical sectors such as education, healthcare and productive enterprise should be prioritised, alongside strengthening institutions and upholding the rule of law.
He also called for a shift from what he described as a consumption-driven culture to one anchored on production, innovation and value creation.
The NDC flag bearer said Nigeria’s challenges can be overcome through deliberate reforms that promote economic productivity, reduce poverty and foster national cohesion.
He further underscored the need for prudent economic management and constructive engagement with the international community, saying both are essential to building a resilient economy and enhancing Nigeria’s global reputation.
Obi said the Berlin forum brought together diplomats, policymakers, development experts, business leaders, international organisations and media representatives to exchange ideas on Nigeria’s future and its place in global affairs.
He thanked the European Council on Foreign Relations for hosting the event, describing dialogue and international collaboration as important tools for advancing development and creating opportunities for Nigerians.
