Former Vice President Osinbajo hails Otti’s social welfare reforms

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has commended Governor Alex Otti for what he described as bold and compassionate social welfare reforms in Abia State, particularly the assent to the Senior Citizens’ Law.
Osinbajo gave the commendation during a visit to the governor at his office in Umuahia. The visit coincided with activities marking Otti’s birthday.
The former vice president described the administration’s welfare initiatives as exemplary and deeply rooted in compassion and social responsibility. He stressed that the world’s most successful societies are built on strong support systems for the vulnerable.
Osinbajo, Nigeria’s 14th vice president, expressed appreciation for the governor’s hospitality and praised his performance in office, noting that the true essence of public service lies in making meaningful differences in the lives of the people.
He also lauded the extensive road infrastructure renewal and improved connectivity across the state, describing the projects as visible symbols of purposeful and results-driven leadership.
Reflecting on the demands of leadership, Osinbajo observed that while many aspire to public office, true distinction comes from delivering on promises.
“I am extremely proud of the work you have done so far. You have lived up to expectations — not only to the people but also to your friends and associates. In the short time I have been here, I have seen tangible evidence of progress,” he said.
“Sometimes you wonder whether, after all the efforts to get into office, leaders are able to fulfill their promises. But in your case, you have done not just what you promised, but even more. You have made public service worthwhile.”

He prayed for renewed strength, wisdom and divine favour for Governor Otti as he continues what he described as the transformation of Abia State.
In his response, Governor Otti warmly welcomed Osinbajo, describing him as a brother, friend and mentor whose visit he deeply appreciated.
The governor clarified that the gathering was not a planned birthday celebration but merely an acknowledgment of the day, noting that he rarely celebrates such occasions publicly, especially while serving in office.
He emphasised his preference for modesty and focus on service, thanking God for what he described as modest but impactful achievements recorded within 32 months in office.
Otti reiterated that governance must remain centred on the welfare and security of the people.
“Governance is about the people — their welfare, their safety and their peace of mind. If you enter office for any other reason, you miss the essence of leadership,” he said.
He recalled decisive actions taken in the early days of his administration when some local government areas were under the control of non-state actors. According to him, firm intervention restored order and ensured that previously inaccessible communities are now safe and open to residents.
“We are grateful to the men and women who stay awake so that our people can sleep in peace,” the governor added.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, on behalf of the State Executive Council, extended birthday wishes to the governor, praying for continued strength and fruitful years ahead.
Representatives of leading financial institutions, including Access Bank, First Bank and UBA, in their goodwill messages, described Otti as a model of credible and ethical leadership at a time when the nation seeks inspiring examples of public service.
They noted that his administration has become a benchmark for excellence, demonstrating that visionary leadership can deliver meaningful change.
