Stakeholders describe Yewa North LG as model for effective leadership

The Chairman of Yewa North Local Government, Ogun State, Dr. Olusola Akinbode, has received widespread commendation for his commitment to improving staff welfare, a move stakeholders have described as a model of effective leadership in public service.
This commendation came during an official visit by the Local Government Service Commission to the council secretariat in Ayetoro.
Addressing the delegation, Dr. Akinbode reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to ensure that workers remain motivated, valued and adequately supported. He listed recent initiatives including prompt payment of salaries, renovation of offices and improved working conditions across departments.
“Our workers are the backbone of local governance. When their welfare is guaranteed, service delivery improves automatically,” he said. “We are determined to make this council a reference point for staff-friendly policies. The goal is not just comfort, but improved service to the public.”
Acting Head of Local Government Administration, Mr. Idowu Odeyemi, noted that staff morale had risen significantly under the current leadership.
“For years, welfare was neglected. But under this administration, workers feel seen and appreciated. The chairman has set a new benchmark,” he said.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Femi Oludare, also described the reforms as transformational.
“We now receive our salaries regularly and work in a conducive environment. Productivity has improved across the board,” he said.
Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Engr. Olawunmi Ogunbona, commended the chairman’s approach, noting that prioritising staff welfare directly strengthens governance.
“When local government workers are happy, the people get better services. The chairman’s people-centred approach deserves wider recognition,” she said.
In her remarks, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Ms. Olivia Onabanjo, recommended the Yewa North model as a blueprint for councils seeking to enhance efficiency through human capital development.
