Ronaldo Makes History as Spain Dazzle and Switzerland March On

By Jessica Afuye

The FIFA World Cup always produces unforgettable moments, and Tuesday’s Round of 32 fixtures delivered another chapter filled with brilliance, history and high drama. Spain underlined their status as genuine title contenders, Cristiano Ronaldo added yet another remarkable milestone to his glittering career, while Switzerland quietly but efficiently booked their place in the Round of 16.

Three nations marched on, but each arrived there in very different fashion.

Spain’s statement performance came first.

Against Austria, La Roja were simply irresistible. Their crisp passing, intelligent movement and relentless control left their opponents chasing shadows for much of the contest.

The breakthrough eventually arrived through Mikel Oyarzabal, who calmly finished after an inch-perfect delivery from Marc Cucurella, whose attacking influence proved decisive throughout the evening.

If Austria hoped for a second-half response, Spain quickly extinguished those ambitions. Pedro Porro doubled the advantage after another flowing attacking move before Oyarzabal completed his brace, once again benefiting from Cucurella’s creativity.

By the final whistle, Spain had not only secured a convincing 3-0 victory but also sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament that they remain one of the teams to beat.

While Spain dazzled with fluid football, Portugal needed resilience – and a familiar hero.

Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved why his name remains synonymous with football greatness.

With the game delicately balanced against Croatia, the Portuguese captain calmly converted a penalty to hand his side the lead, becoming the oldest player ever to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match.

Croatia refused to surrender. Ivan Perišić restored parity after connecting with an excellent delivery from Josip Stanišić, setting the stage for a tense finale.

Just when extra time appeared inevitable, Gonçalo Ramos emerged as Portugal’s saviour.

Deep into stoppage time, the striker powered home a decisive header from Rafael Leão’s cross, sending Portugal into the Round of 16 and breaking Croatian hearts.

Croatia thought they had rescued the contest moments later, only for VAR to rule out a dramatic late equaliser for offside.

As Ronaldo celebrated another record in a career overflowing with historic achievements, Portugal celebrated survival.

Switzerland’s route to the last 16 was far less dramatic but equally effective.

Facing an energetic Algeria side, the Swiss relied on discipline, organisation and clinical finishing.

Breel Embolo opened the scoring after being picked out by Dan Ndoye, giving Switzerland the platform they needed to control proceedings.

Algeria pushed relentlessly for a way back into the match, but Switzerland’s defensive structure remained intact, with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel producing several important saves whenever called upon.

Any lingering hopes of an Algerian comeback disappeared late in the game when Zeki Amdouni calmly finished after Michel Aebischer’s assist to seal a deserved 2-0 victory.

As the tournament gathers momentum, the Round of 16 promises even greater excitement.

The standout fixture now pits neighbours Spain and Portugal against each other in a blockbuster Iberian derby featuring one of the tournament’s most entertaining teams against a Portugal side inspired by the enduring brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Meanwhile, Switzerland will await the winner of the Colombia-Ghana clash as they continue their quiet pursuit of World Cup glory.

With every passing knockout match, the margin for error becomes slimmer, the pressure grows heavier, and the race to lift football’s biggest prize becomes even more compelling.
