Police dismiss Nuhu Usman, other officers over Delta killing, recommend homicide charges

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal of Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the fatal shooting of Oghenemine Ogidi, a musician in Delta State and directed that they be prosecuted for unlawful homicide.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the police chief said findings from internal investigations showed that the officers acted in clear breach of established rules governing the use of firearms.

According to him, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which reviewed the case, established that Usman, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, violated Force Order 237 and other operational guidelines of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The investigation confirmed without any ambiguity that ASP Nuhu Usman acted in gross violation of Force Order 237,” he said, adding that no level of suspicion against a citizen justifies extrajudicial killing.

The IGP disclosed that both the FDC and orderly room trials recommended the immediate dismissal of all officers found culpable, including other senior officers and inspectors present at the scene.

He added that, upon dismissal, the affected officers would be handed over to relevant judicial authorities to face criminal prosecution.

“In line with constitutional requirements, I have forwarded these recommendations to the Police Service Commission for final ratification,” he said.

The IGP stressed that the conduct of the officers does not reflect the standards or values of the police, reaffirming the force’s commitment to accountability and the protection of human rights.

The action follows widespread outrage over the killing of 28-year-old Ogidi, a musician popularly known as OG Millan, during a police operation in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026.

The incident triggered protests, with demonstrators storming the Ekpan Police Station and demanding justice for the deceased.

The victim’s family also raised concerns, with his mother alleging that he was the second of her sons to die in encounters with police officers.

The case attracted condemnation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which described the killing as unconstitutional and called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of all those involved.

A viral video of the incident, which appeared to show the victim restrained and pleading for his life before being shot, has continued to fuel public anger and renewed calls for police reforms.
