Osun Poll: I’ll deliver 24-hour electricity, rebuild state if elected – ADC’s Najeem Salaam

…Unveils 10-Point Development Agenda
By Sunday Oguntuyi, Osogbo
The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Osun State, Najeem Folasayo Salaam, has pledged to deliver 24-hour electricity supply and embark on a broad programme of state reconstruction if elected in the August 15 governorship election.
Salaam made the promise on Monday while presenting his manifesto at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Osogbo, where he unveiled a 10-point agenda aimed at transforming the state’s economy, infrastructure, governance structure and social services.
He said Osun was at a critical turning point and required a new direction that would unlock its economic and human potential through purposeful leadership and inclusive governance.
According to him, the manifesto is designed as a practical roadmap to restore public confidence in government while repositioning the state for sustainable growth and development.
“Our state stands at a defining moment. The choices we make today will determine the Osun we leave for future generations. We can either remain stagnant or embrace transformation,” he said.
The former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly said the agenda was developed after wide consultations with stakeholders across the state, adding that it prioritises accountability, service delivery and inclusiveness.
Salaam expressed concern that despite Osun’s vast human and natural resources, many residents continue to grapple with unemployment, poor infrastructure and economic hardship.
He stressed that leadership should be measured by service delivery rather than political office-holding.
“Leadership is about solving problems, creating opportunities and improving lives, not occupying positions of privilege,” he said.
A central component of his plan is a commitment to improve electricity supply, which he described as essential for economic development.
Salaam said his administration would invest in power infrastructure, renewable energy and public-private partnerships to achieve reliable 24-hour electricity across the state.
“Electricity remains the backbone of development. It drives industries, supports businesses, strengthens healthcare delivery and improves education,” he added.
He also promised improved welfare for civil servants and pensioners, describing workers as the backbone of governance and assuring timely payment and better conditions of service.
Youth empowerment featured prominently in his address, with the ADC candidate pledging programmes in skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, digital innovation and job creation.
He also vowed to expand opportunities for women in governance and economic participation, describing them as key drivers of development.
On healthcare, Salaam promised upgrades to medical facilities, equipment and staffing to improve service delivery, while also pledging reforms in the education sector to enhance infrastructure and learning outcomes.
The manifesto further outlines plans for road construction, urban renewal and rural development aimed at improving connectivity and stimulating economic activities across the state.
On security, he promised closer collaboration between security agencies, traditional rulers and local communities to safeguard lives and property.
Salaam also assured investors of a business-friendly environment anchored on transparency, policy stability and ease of doing business.
He emphasised that his manifesto represents a binding social contract with the people of Osun State.
“This is not just a document of promises; it is a contract built on integrity, service and a clear vision for prosperity,” he said.
As political activities intensify ahead of the election, the unveiling of the ADC candidate’s blueprint is expected to shape policy debates and sharpen competition among contenders seeking the governorship seat.
