Ogun intensifies healthcare reforms, moves to resolve school gas emission crisis

The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has moved to strengthen environmental sustainability with plans to partner E‑Terra Technologies Limited for the safe management of electronic waste across the state.

The development came as the Ogun State Executive Council also approved a new set of road projects across the three senatorial districts as part of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s ongoing urban renewal programme.

During a meeting in Abeokuta, OGEPA and the proposed partners – E-Terra Technologies Limited and the E‑Waste Relief Foundation – advanced discussions on a framework aimed at establishing a structured and environmentally responsible e-waste management system in the state.

At the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed granting the companies an initial two-year operational window to demonstrate their technical capacity, operational standards and environmental compliance in handling electronic waste.

Chief Executive Officer of E-Terra Technologies Limited, Ifeanyi Ochonogor, said the collaboration would help corporate organisations in Ogun State dispose of obsolete electronics in a safe and globally compliant manner.

“Our objective is to provide a structured system that ensures electronic waste is properly collected, sorted, detoxified and responsibly processed. The two-year period will enable us to fully demonstrate the efficiency and environmental safety of our operations,” he said.

Director of E-Terra Technologies, Antony Ita, explained that e-waste collected from companies would be taken to designated facilities where they would be sorted and categorised.

He noted that hazardous materials containing lead, mercury, cadmium and other toxic substances would be carefully extracted and subjected to proper detoxification and environmentally sound disposal processes.

“The safety of the environment remains our priority. Hazardous fractions will be properly treated to prevent contamination of soil and water. Materials designated for recycling abroad will be carefully packaged according to international export standards and shipped to our technical partners in France,” he said.

Programme Manager of the E-Waste Relief Foundation, Ebeleme Jeremiah, said the foundation would focus on advocacy, stakeholder engagement and awareness creation to ensure companies understand their environmental responsibilities.

Responding, the General Manager of OGEPA, Kehinde Bello, said the agency would play a supervisory role in the partnership to ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations.

“As regulators, we must ensure that every process adopted is environmentally friendly. Detoxification is not negotiable; it must be central to the entire e-waste management chain,” he said.

Bello added that OGEPA would issue official letters introducing E-Terra Technologies to corporate organisations across the state as the authorised service provider for e-waste management under the agency’s oversight.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Executive Council has approved several major road projects across the state to boost infrastructure and economic activities.

Among the projects is the reconstruction of the right-hand side of the Carwash–Moore Junction Road in Adatan, Abeokuta, a major corridor expected to ease traffic congestion and improve commercial activities within the state capital.

Other approved projects include Bible College Road in Ota, in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area; Ajaka Road via Awolowo Market in Sagamu; Gbadebo Street and Hospital Road in Ayegbami, Sagamu; Okenla Street off Imoru Road in Ijebu-Ode; and Yemogun Street in Ikenne.

Governor Abiodun said the projects aligned with his administration’s development agenda and would help improve access, stimulate economic activities and enhance the quality of life for residents.

“These projects are about creating access, unlocking economic potential and ensuring that every part of Ogun State feels the impact of purposeful governance,” the governor said.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, described the approvals as strategic interventions targeting high-impact areas.

He assured residents that the ministry would maintain strict supervision and quality control to ensure the timely completion and durability of the projects.

According to him, the road projects would enhance mobility, reduce travel time and further consolidate Ogun State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading industrial and investment destinations.
