The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan (UI) Central Mosque, Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Uthman, has urged Nigerians to shun crime regardless of the economic or social challenges they face, stressing that faith in God remains the ultimate source of deliverance.

In his Eid-el-Kabir message, Professor Uthman cautioned citizens against resorting to criminal activities or actions that could cause hardship and unhappiness to others, noting that difficult national conditions should not justify wrongdoing.

He also delivered a strong message to political leaders, warning them not to allow their ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections to overshadow the welfare of the people they seek to govern.

“I am calling on our leaders and politicians to put the interests of the people as a priority. It is only God who determines who will be alive in 2027, and only He has the absolute power to elevate anyone to any position they aspire to,” he said.

The cleric urged leaders at all levels of government—including the presidency, state governors, lawmakers, and other public office holders—to intensify efforts to address insecurity, poverty, infrastructural deficits, and other challenges affecting citizens. He also called for increased efforts to secure the release of those currently in captivity.

Professor Uthman said Muslims and Nigerians generally should emulate the virtues of Prophet Ibrahim, particularly obedience to God, humility, and commitment to doing good.

He added that Eid-el-Kabir serves as a reminder for both leaders and citizens to fear God in all actions and to leave behind positive legacies that contribute to humanity.

According to him, government must strengthen the nation’s security architecture, warning that failure to do so carries moral consequences.

“God will question leaders over every life lost due to negligence and the actions of criminals,” he said.

He further encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith, stressing that God remains faithful and will not abandon His people in times of difficulty.
