By Jessica Afuye
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is entering its defining phase, and if the latest round of knockout matches is any indication, football fans are in for a spectacular finish.
On a day filled with moments of brilliance, Kylian Mbappé once again reminded the world why he remains one of football’s biggest stars, Erling Haaland delivered when it mattered most for Norway, while tournament co-hosts Mexico kept their title dream alive with an assured victory over Ecuador.
Mbappé Inspires France’s Statement Win
France produced one of the most complete performances of the knockout stage, brushing aside Sweden 3-0 with a display of attacking quality and tactical discipline.
Leading from the front, captain Mbappé stole the spotlight with a clinical brace that underlined his growing influence on the tournament.
The French skipper broke the deadlock just before halftime, calmly finishing after a perfectly weighted through ball from Ousmane Dembélé.
France returned from the break with even greater purpose. Bradley Barcola doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute after being brilliantly picked out by Michael Olise, whose creativity consistently troubled the Swedish defence.
Olise then turned provider once again in the 74th minute, delivering another incisive pass for Mbappé to score his second goal of the evening and seal an emphatic victory for Didier Deschamps’ side.
While Mbappé grabbed the headlines, Olise quietly produced one of the tournament’s finest creative displays with two assists.
Mexico Keeps Home Dream Alive
The atmosphere inside the stadium reached fever pitch as Mexico delighted its home supporters with a convincing 2-0 victory over Ecuador to secure a place in the next round.
Backed by a passionate crowd, El Tri played with confidence and intensity from the opening whistle, refusing to allow Ecuador any rhythm.
Their dominance paid off in the 22nd minute when Julián Quiñones finished off a flowing attacking move after being set up by Roberto Alvarado.
Nine minutes later, veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s advantage, converting a pass from Quiñones to put the hosts firmly in control before halftime.
Although Ecuador attempted a second-half comeback, Mexico’s disciplined defence frustrated every attack.
The South Americans’ hopes were effectively extinguished deep into stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapié received a red card, bringing an end to their World Cup campaign.
For Mexico, however, belief continues to grow that this could become one of the nation’s greatest World Cup journeys.
Haaland Delivers Again for Norway
If France won comfortably and Mexico thrilled their fans, Norway had to dig deep to keep their campaign alive.
In a fiercely contested encounter against Ivory Coast, the Scandinavians survived sustained pressure before emerging 2-1 winners thanks to a late intervention from their talisman, Erling Haaland.
Norway struck first in the 39th minute when Antonio Nusa finished confidently after an intelligent pass from captain Martin Ødegaard.
Ivory Coast refused to surrender and found a deserved equaliser in the 74th minute through Amad Diallo, who combined brilliantly with Nicolas Pépé before beating the goalkeeper.
With extra time looming, Haaland produced the decisive moment.
In the 86th minute, the Manchester City striker arrived inside the penalty area to convert Patrick Berg’s delivery, sending Norwegian players and supporters into wild celebrations.
It was another reminder of Haaland’s reputation for deciding the biggest matches when the pressure is at its highest.
Tournament Gathering Momentum
As the knockout stage gathers pace, the race for football’s biggest prize is becoming increasingly captivating.
France continue to look every inch championship contenders with Mbappé leading a talented generation, Mexico’s dream of lifting the trophy on home soil remains alive, while Norway have shown they possess both resilience and a match-winner capable of changing any contest.
With every passing match producing new heroes, dramatic moments and unforgettable storylines, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is rapidly shaping up as one of the tournament’s most memorable editions.
