Grammys 2026: Tyla triumphs as Nigeria misses out, Kendrick Lamar tops winners’ list [Full List]

South African star Tyla Laura Seethal, professionally known as Tyla, emerged as one of the standout winners at the 2026 Grammy Awards, clinching the Best African Music Performance prize and leaving Nigerian heavyweights empty-handed on a night dominated by American rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Tyla, 24, won the African category with her hit Push 2 Start, defeating a strong Nigerian lineup that included Burna Boy’s Love, Davido’s With You featuring Omah Lay, Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s Gimme Dat, and Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin’s Hope & Love.

The category, introduced in 2024 to spotlight African sounds on the global stage, again featured dominant Nigerian representation, with three Nigerian artistes making the final shortlist. However, Tyla’s victory marked her second win in the category after she became its inaugural recipient with Water two years ago, underlining her rising global influence.

Despite multiple nominations across categories, Nigerian artistes failed to secure a single award at this year’s ceremony. Burna Boy, nominated in both the Best African Music Performance and Best Global Music Album categories, lost out in both, while Davido, Ayra Starr, Wizkid and Omah Lay also fell short in the African music category.

In the Best Global Music Album category, Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia took home the award for Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo, edging out Burna Boy’s No Sign of Weakness.

Beyond the African music spotlight, Kendrick Lamar was the biggest winner of the night, claiming five awards, including Record of the Year for his collaboration with SZA, Luther.

Other major winners included Bad Bunny, who secured Album of the Year, Billie Eilish, who won Song of the Year for Wildflower, and Olivia Dean, named Best New Artist.

The Recording Academy presented awards across 95 categories, with many handed out during the pre-telecast premiere ceremony before the main broadcast.

Tyla’s repeat triumph in the African category stood out as one of the defining moments of the night, reinforcing her growing stature as a leading voice in contemporary African music, while Nigeria – despite its strong presence – went home without a Grammy trophy this year.
