Ghana sack coach Otto Addo weeks before World Cup

Ghana has dismissed national team coach Otto Addo, barely ten weeks before the start of the World Cup, following a series of poor results.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the decision on Tuesday, hours after the Black Stars suffered a 2–1 defeat to Germany in a friendly match in Stuttgart on Monday.
Germany needed a late strike from Deniz Undav to secure the win, compounding Ghana’s recent struggles on the pitch.
The defeat marked Ghana’s fourth consecutive loss, coming shortly after the team was heavily beaten 5–1 by Austria in another friendly last week.
In a brief statement confirming Addo’s dismissal, the GFA expressed appreciation for his service to the national team.
“The association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours,” the football body said.
The association added that it would announce a new technical direction for the Black Stars in due course.
Addo, 50, had been in charge of the team since March 2024.
His departure comes with just over 70 days remaining before the FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in North America later this year.
At the tournament, Ghana have been drawn in Group D alongside England, Croatia and Panama, setting up a challenging path for the four-time African champions.
