Dangote Cement ramps up sustainability efforts with 1,500 new CNG trucks

Dangote Cement Plc has intensified its sustainability drive with plans to expand its fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered trucks, as the company steps up efforts to cut carbon emissions and promote environmentally responsible operations across Africa.

The cement manufacturer said it would acquire an additional 1,500 CNG trucks as part of its green logistics strategy aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving transport efficiency and lowering dependence on diesel-powered vehicles.

The company disclosed that the initiative forms part of its broader sustainability agenda, which focuses on environmental protection, energy efficiency, responsible governance, community development and long-term value creation in the 10 African countries where it operates.

Dangote Cement also announced that its environmental performance had received international recognition, with its climate and water management initiatives earning an upgraded “B” rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

According to the company, optimising energy consumption remains central to its operations, enabling it to reduce production costs while advancing its decarbonisation objectives.

Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Cement, Arvind Pathak, said sustainability had become an integral part of the company’s growth strategy rather than a standalone programme.

“At Dangote Cement, sustainability is embedded in the way we operate, invest and grow. As we expand our footprint across Africa, we remain committed to reducing our environmental impact through cleaner energy sources, improved operational efficiency and innovative logistics solutions such as our growing CNG-powered fleet,” he said.

Pathak noted that while cement remains critical to Africa’s infrastructure and economic development, the company is equally committed to ensuring that production processes minimise emissions, conserve natural resources and create lasting benefits for host communities.

He said the company’s objective was to generate sustainable value for shareholders while contributing to Africa’s transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy.

Beyond its environmental initiatives, Dangote Cement said it continues to strengthen corporate governance and promote diversity at board level. According to the company, women currently account for 28 per cent of its Board membership, while directors are drawn from seven different nationalities.

The company added that its sustainability programmes are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular emphasis on climate action, responsible industrialisation, inclusive economic growth and community development.
