BREAKING: Godswill Akpabio elected senate president

Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom State, has been elected senate president.

Akpabio, former minister of Niger Delta affairs, who was the anointed candidate of the APC,  was elected at the inauguration of the 10th assembly on Tuesday.

He defeated Abdulaziz Yari, former Zamfara State governor.

Before voting started on the floor of the Senate Chamber in the early hours of the day, a former Leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, had nominated and read the biography of Akpabio.

The nomination was seconded y Senator Olamilekan Solomon Yayi from Ogun State.

Senator Elisha Abbo from Adamawa State nominated Yari for the position of Senate president.

Akpabio secured 63 votes from the available 109 to defeat Yari who secured 46 votes.
