Abia: Otti roles out plans to combat infrastructural decay, flooding, touting

Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti has spoken about the determination of his administration to reclaim the state from infrastructural decay to give it a pride of place in the comity of states.

He has also come up with a comprehensive plan to combat the perennial flooding in the commercial nerve centre of Aba and other troubled areas of the state as well as distilling blocked gutters.

To this end, government has embarked on 26 new roads, which are at different stages of completion, while the state Orientation Agency is on intensive advocacy to re-orientate Abians on the need to keep their environments clean.

Governor Otti who disclosed these measures at his 4th Madia parley, titled “Governor Otti speaks”, designed to keep the public abreast of the activities of government , called on the people to support his on-going efforts geared towards CHANGING THE NARRATIVES IN Abia as well as sustaining the cleanliness drive of the present administration.

His words:” This media interaction offers me the opportunity to explain the policies and programmes of government to the people.. Out of the 26 Roads, six(6) brand new roads have been commissioned, with four(4) others in Aba awaiting commissioning.

“The selection of roads for construction is based on strategic importance and the “zero” potholds policy of this administration, through direct labour, is aimed at ridding the state of potholes. We want our state to be sanitized and decent so that people who want to do business with us will openly come and invest.

” Under my watch, the welfare of Abians remains top priority of my administration. We are single-minded about change. We cannot achieve anything without your support”

On the menace of touts, illegal collection and multiple taxation in the state, the governor assured that a more serious approach would be adopted to eliminate touting in the state. He said the state government would soon commence a programme aimed at , not only orientating the youths , but also provide them access to capital to help them to be gainfully employed.

Talking about the recently established Abia Global Economic Advisory Council(AGEAC), comprising notable personalities , including Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, DG, World Trade centre; former CBN governor, Khalifa Sanisu Lamido; fmr Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC DG, Ms Arunma Oteh and others, Otti commended them for accepting their appointments and for their pro-bono services to Abians.

The governor explained that the council aims to provide advice and facilitate opportunities for local and foreign capitals to support Abia state and expressed confidence in its positive impact on Abia’s economic development.

Governor Otti further highlighted initiatives of the state government in the healthcare, Education, among others ; and emphasized on the on-going Reforms in the state Civil service as well as efforts to address the concerns of pensioners. He assured of timely resolution and payment of leave allowances for eligible workers.

His words: ”We are discussing with the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, NUP, and we shall soon come up with agreements on how to clear the backlog of unpaid pension arrears. When pension stabilizes, we move over to Gratuity (which was last paid in 2001). We have completed Verification exercise to determine the number of Government workers and amount to pay monthly to genuine workers.”
