Abia launches environmental, healthcare, social development initiatives

The Abia State Government has announced a series of measures aimed at improving environmental sanitation, healthcare delivery, and social development across the state, following this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. The developments were outlined in a statement by Okey Kanu, the state Commissioner for Information.
In a bid to sustain progress in environmental management, the government will enforce the mandatory display of waste bins in all commercial vehicles across Abia from April 1, 2026. The initiative is designed to promote proper waste disposal habits among commuters and strengthen the state’s sanitation framework.
The statement noted that the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has transformed the state’s sanitation standards, earning commendations nationally and internationally. Key environmental interventions highlighted include the reclamation of the Amaiyi Amaogudu gully erosion in Isuikwuato, flood control works at Elugwu Nkata in Umuahia North, and completion of erosion control projects in Oro-Ibere, Ikwuano Local Government Area.
ASEPA is also expanding sustainable waste management initiatives, including plastic recycling facilities in Aba and along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, with plans to convert organic waste into diesel and other hydrocarbon products, supporting a circular economy. Residents are urged to avoid indiscriminate dumping and use designated disposal points.
On healthcare, the state has recorded significant milestones. A 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner has been donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for installation at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, to enhance diagnostic services.
The Abia State Health Insurance Scheme continues to expand access, recording 157,462 new enrollees, while the state has approved the recruitment of an additional 50 nurses, bringing the total employed to 550, part of a broader plan to recruit 771 healthcare personnel.
The Abia State College of Nursing Sciences also received a positive assessment from the National Board for Technical Education for its National Diploma programme, following facility upgrades and improved training standards. The state is collaborating with MedShare USA to train technicians in medical equipment maintenance, ensuring sustainability in healthcare delivery.
Public health in the state remains stable, with no reported cases of Lassa fever, Mpox, diphtheria, yellow fever, cholera, or rabies, reflecting the effectiveness of ongoing interventions.
Abia State will also host a free medical outreach in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas from April 12 to 17, 2026, in Aba and Umuahia, offering surgeries, consultations, and capacity-building for healthcare workers.
A notable success in healthcare was recorded at a refurbished primary health centre in Ohiya, where a woman with a life-threatening obstetric condition successfully delivered twins, thanks to modern equipment and skilled personnel.
In social development, the state will commemorate International Women’s Day 2026 on March 31 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, under the theme “Give to Gain,” promoting philanthropy and support for vulnerable groups.
Commissioner Kanu said these initiatives demonstrate the administration’s commitment to sustainable governance, improving quality of life, and building a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Abia State.
These measures reflect a coordinated approach by the Otti administration to integrate environmental sustainability, healthcare advancement, and social development for long-term state growth.
