Why is 420 ‘Weed Day’ and how did it start?

What does April 20 or the numbers 420 have to do with marijuana?

Today, weed smokers across the United States will celebrate Weed Day as they have done for decades a day they also call 4/20 (April 20) or “Weed Day.”

Weed smokers today will rally in states where recreational weed smoking is illegal, to celebrate the day, and seek federal decriminalization and legalization of the plant.

But why is April 20 or the numbers 420 so significant to marijuana fans?

Whereas nobody is 100% sure how April 20 became Weed Day, there are claims that 420 is the police code for weed, while some say it is the penal code in California for marijuana possession or use. Recreational use of the plant is legal in California.

A popular Bob Dylan song title “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35″ and the lyric “Everybody must get stoned.” is also a rumoured source for the 420 nickname, moreso because 12 multiplied by 35 is 420.

But the most credible theory goes back to the 1970s in California. The New York Times, reported that Five students at San Rafael High School would meet daily at 4:20 p.m. and wait until later in the afternoon to smoke weed.

But a more credible story was told by TIME, that a band called Grateful Dead, shared flyers Deadheads (Grateful Dead enthusiasts – in Oakland, Calif. in 1990) inviting them to “smoke 420″ on April 20 at 4:20 p.m.
