Uproar over Aisha Buhari’s N10m wristwatch

The allegedly N10million wristwatch worn during last week’s presidential inauguration ceremonies by First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has continued to generate controversy among Nigerians on social media who have complained over what they describe as the very high cost of the ornamental item.
It has also been noticed that the first lady had equally adorned the wristwatch and put on associated accessories, including the Cartier Baignoire Folle 18-Carat White Gold Diamond Ladies Watch in her newly unveiled official portrait.
Commentators were however, divided on the issue, with some saying that it was purely Aisha Buhari’s private life.
Some of them argued that Aisha Buhari’s putting on an allegedly N10million watch does not portray the government of her husband as a government that would stand by its promises to reduce the cost of governance and excessive spending by political office holders.
The commentators were sentimental on the worth of the wrist watch as they reflected on its monetary value, while recollecting the campaign promises of her husband.
One of the commentators, using the handle Royal Priesthood, said: “this is really getting interesting; after all, they voted for change so the change starts with them. So, don’t blame her if she puts on such a watch. She has to display change”.
“Change does not necessarily assure progress but progress implacably requires change. Change is inevitable. Change for the better is a full time job.”
Another respondent, Onome Macy, said that it could have been a gift for her from somebody, while Morenikeji Comfort argued that Hajia Aisha Buhari’s lifestyle in government might surpass Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan’s notoriously outlandish lifestyle.
“Let us see if her own spending would not surpass Madam Patience’s own while in government”, said Comfort.
Jennifer Michael said President Buhari should declare his assets publicly, stating that all politicians in the country are all the same.
Meanwhile, few of the commentators argued that Aisha Buhari had been running her own business before her husband became the President of Nigeria.
They stressed further that the N10million wrist watch outing was a display of how she would act financially as Nigeria’s First Lady.
