[VIDEO] Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Kwankwaso lead mass ‘Save Democracy’ March to INEC in Abuja

Abuja streets were filled with demonstrators on Tuesday as leading Nigerian political figures took to the city to spearhead the “Save Nigeria Democracy” protest.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola joined the march from Maitama Roundabout toward the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The protest, organized by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was staged to express concern over alleged partisanship by INEC, which organizers claim threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Protesters carried placards with slogans including “Hands off our courts”, “Tinubu Let Our Democracy Breathe,” and other messages defending the independence of Nigeria’s electoral process. Amaechi addressed participants from a van, urging calm and peaceful participation as the march moved through the streets.

In a post on his X account, Atiku described the demonstration as a patriotic effort to protect democracy. “Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire. Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship,” he wrote.

Earlier, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi had called on Nigerians to join the protest, appealing to “well-meaning citizens, lovers of democracy” to reject moves toward a one-party system.

Social media posts and videos captured Obi, Kwankwaso, and other ADC leaders holding a banner reading: “Tinubu, let our democracy breathe,” as demonstrators marched through the nation’s capital.

The protest is part of a broader wave of political activism ahead of the 2026 elections, with opposition leaders calling for transparency and fairness in the conduct of the electoral process.
