Elumelu celebrates 62nd birthday with fresh investment in African entrepreneurs

Chairman of Heirs Holdings and renowned philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, has marked his 62nd birthday with the unveiling of the 2026 cohort of the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme.

The announcement, made on Sunday, underscores Elumelu’s sustained commitment to nurturing Africa’s next generation of business leaders through funding, mentorship, and training.

Reflecting on the philosophy behind the initiative, Elumelu noted that success is not merely a product of chance but can be intentionally created through structured opportunities.

“For a long time, I believed luck was something that just happens to you. Then I realised luck can be engineered. Opportunity can be democratised. Hope is not just a feeling; it is a system we can build,” he stated via his X account.

He revealed that the new cohort was unveiled alongside his wife, Awele Elumelu, who co-founded the Foundation, as part of their ongoing mission to expand economic opportunities across the continent.

This year’s programme will support 3,200 entrepreneurs selected from over 265,000 applicants spanning all 54 African countries. The selection followed the close of applications on March 1.

Beneficiaries will each receive a $5,000 non-refundable seed grant, in addition to access to business training, mentorship, and the Foundation’s extensive pan-African network.

Highlighting the selection criteria, Elumelu said the beneficiaries were chosen for their resilience and perseverance rather than the ease of their journeys.

“We did not choose you because your path was easy. We chose you because you kept going when it wasn’t,” he said.

He also reiterated his long-held belief that Africa’s greatest strength lies in its people, urging participants to leverage the opportunity to drive economic transformation across the continent.

Now in its 12th year, the programme remains one of Africa’s largest privately funded entrepreneurship initiatives, continuing to empower thousands of startups and small businesses.
